Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Can you believe it? It’s our very last year at Sedlescombe!

Welcome to Year 6! The busiest, most challenging but most incredibly fun and rewarding year of primary school.

In year 6 we will have many new challenges and responsibilities including being a reception buddy as well as lots of events and activities to enjoy throughout the year with our residential trip to PGL being a fantastic highlight to look forward to!

Year 6 is also an important year in making sure that we head to secondary school as prepared as we possibly can. We don’t just mean in learning but also will work hard to prepare the children for the added responsibilities that will hit them in year 7. In the summer, the children will have the opportunity to spend transition days in their new secondary schools in order to prepare them for this change.

Home Learning

Home learning is especially important in Year 6 as when children start secondary school, they could potentially have homework every night and we need to prepare them for this.

  • Reading is still very important and we expect daily reading at home. Please record what you have been reading and your reaction towards it on Padlet.
  • Spelling is a real focus for us as a class. You will have your 10 spellings given to you each week on a Monday that you will need to practise before we test in class on the following Monday. It really is important to learn these words as spellings is a huge target for us as a class
  • Times tables is a major target for us as a class! Each week I will expect at least half an hour on TTRS and any extra time is a bonus. Children doing this and also using numbots will be rewarded.

PE

A PE kit should be brought in to school on PE Days. It is really important that the children become responsible for having their PE kit in school as some secondary schools will give detention to children who do not have their kits!

Jewellery MUST be removed, so if your child has pierced ears they will need a small pot to put their earrings in to keep them safe.

Long hair should be tied back for school, but MUST be tied back for P.E. Lessons so a spare hair band is useful.

Concerns

Please do not hesitate to come in and see us if you have any concerns or queries about Year Six. We are always available after school and happy to help in any way we can.
